Sunbeam Cycles was founded by John Marston (1836\u20131918). In 1859, at the age of 23, he bought Daniel Smith Lester\u2019s japanning business and established his own business, John Marston Limited, producing japanned tin goods. In 1887 he began making bicycles.<\/p>
On the suggestion of his wife Ellen, John Marston adopted the trademark Sunbeam for his bicycles. He named the John Marston Limited works in Paul Street, Wolverhampton, Sunbeamland.<\/em><\/p> From 1903 John Marston Limited experimented in adding engines to bicycles, but they were largely unsuccessful, resulting in the death of one of his workers. This stopped any further development and he turned his attention to making cars in a separate organisation located a mile away, named Sunbeam Motor Car Company Limited. However, a slump soon hit the car making market, so Marston (now 76) was pushed into making motorcycles from 1912 onwards, for which there was a large and increasing market.\u00a0<\/p> Following in the tradition of their bicycles, the motorcycles were of a high quality and became known as The Gentleman's Machine.<\/em><\/p> Almost as soon as motorcycle manufacture began at Sunbeamland, the company\u2019s motorcycles and riders regularly took part in sporting events. John Greenwood, the chief designer, actively encouraged participation in trials and competitions. The riders took part in all kinds of international events, and from 1920 to 1929, the Sunbeam works team riders came first six times in the Isle of Man Senior Tourist Trophy (T.T.) race.<\/p> In 1922, George Dance (pictured top \u00a9Stilltime Images Ltd)<\/em> became the first person to lap Brooklands at over 80mph on a 350, riding a works overhead-valve Sunbeam. Charlie Dodson won the Senior T.T. race in 1928 and 1929 (pictured above left \u00a9Stilltime Images Ltd). <\/em>And before becoming a Grand Prix motor car racing legend, Italian rider Achille Varzi (pictured above right \u00a9Archives A. Herl)<\/em> rode Sunbeams in the Isle of Man T.T.<\/p> After 1930 Sunbeam continued to take part in trials events but racing was discontinued and George Dance left the company. In 1937 the Sunbeam motorcycle trademark was sold to Associated Motor Cycles Ltd (AMC) which continued to make Sunbeam bicycles and motorcycles until 1939. In 1943 AMC sold the Sunbeam name to BSA and Sunbeam Cycles Limited was incorporated.
